A rundown of records and historic sports moments that took place on Long Island
April 6, 2025: The Capitals Alex Ovechkin passes Wayne Gretzky for goal number 895 in a 4-1 Islanders victory at UBS Arena in Elmont.
June 16, 2002: Tiger Woods won the U.S. Open finishing three shots ahead of Phil Mickelson in his eighth career major championship at Bethpage Black at Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale.
June 9, 1973: Secretariat won the 1973 Belmont Stakes to win the Triple Crown at Belmont Park. Secretariat was victorious by 31 lengths becoming the ninth Triple Crown winner in history and the first in 25 years.
May 10, 1974: Roosevelt native Julius Erving and the New York Nets vanquished the Utah Jazz 111-100 to beat Utah in five games in the 1974 ABA Finals at the Coliseum. Irving, synonymous as Dr. J took home MVP playoff honors.
May 13, 1976: The New York Nets defeated the Denver Nuggets to win their second ABA championship in three years on their home court at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale in the final ABA game ever. Irving was awarded MVP playoff honors again and scored 31 points in the finale in game six.
May 17, 1983: The New York Islanders completed the sweep of the Edmonton Oilers as they defeated Edmonton 4-2 in game four at the Coliseum to win their fourth consecutive Stanley Cup championship. The Montreal Canadiens are the only other NHL team to win four straight Stanley Cups. Billy Smith earned Conn Smythe Trophy honors.
January 24, 1981: Mike Bossy scored his 50th goal in his 50th game of the 1981 championship season in a 7-4 win over the Quebec Nordiques at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Bossy at the time became the second NHL player along with Rocket Richard to join the “50-in-50” club.
December 23, 1978: Bryan Trottier set an NHL record scoring six points in one period as the Center scored three goals and three assists during an Islanders offensive barrage of a seven-goal second period in a 9-4 victory over the Rangers in Uniondale. Trottier finished the contest with eight points: five goals and three assists.
Most goals scored by an Islander in a game: Five goals is the record for goals in a single game by an Islander in Islanders history. Trottier scored five in December 1978, January 1981 John Tonelli scored five goals in a 6-3 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs and a year later in February 1982, Bryan Trottier notched five goals again this time in an 8-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers.
Most assists in an NHL game on Long Island: January 6, 1981 in the 6-3 win over the Maple Leafs at the Coliseum, Mike Bossy set an Islander record for six assists in a game and December 27, 2023, an opponent tied an assists record in an Islanders game as Kris Letang of the Pittsburgh Penguins tallied six assists in a 7-0 Pittsburgh win at UBS Arena. (Guy Chouinard of the Calgary Flames also recorded six assists vs. the Islanders in 1981 but it was in Calgary.)
